We want Royton Community Hub to be a warm, welcoming, inclusive, safe space for everyone in Royton. We set up rules when we created the page, which we ask people to agree to abide to before joining the page. We will update the rules as and when new issues arise. We’ve amended them recently to update our stance on dealing with posts about both reported and potential crimes.
Being part of this group requires mutual trust. Authentic, expressive discussions make groups great, but may also be sensitive and private. You are responsible for what you post however we will delete posts that accuse individuals or businesses of crimes, those which claim to be seeking missing people (unless from official sources), and pictures of people or identifying vehicles posted without consent.
Rule 6
We’ve also spoken with our local policing team about our approach and this blog post is a result of that.
Victim or crime of witness to a crime?
If you are a victim of a crime or witness a crime please always contact GMP in the first instance. Royton Community Hub is not the place to post this.
101 to report anything other than an immediate emergency
999 if a life is in danger or there is a crime in progress
Via live chat www.gmp.police.uk
By reporting online www.gmp.police.uk
Do not post to Facebook
Our local police team say “We ask victims not to place anything on Facebook/or any other social media, or pages like yours as this may hinder the investigation. Also what may seem like a generic post or an information post may cause a case of miss identity which could lead to an innocent member of the public being accused of something they haven’t done.”
PC Stott – GMP Oldham
Royton Community Hub will continue to share crime related posts from either GMP or local/national press/verified accounts. We will also delete, without warning, any posts that identify an individual as being a potential criminal.
Finally, to give information/intelligence anonymously please contact Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 or go to their website https://crimestoppers-uk.org/
